Hi everyone! I hope you all had a fun and relaxing long weekend.
Here's what happened in class today: L.A. - We continued the editing/revising process for our legends and fables. Most kids are now into the drafting and editing phase. The stories are sounding really great! Math - today students had a chance to make up their own multiplication word problems and challenge their friends to solve them. These must be finished for Thursday if they didn't get completed in class. Art We are almost done our Popcan Picasso projects! Here are a few samples. Aren't they awesome?! Here's what happened in class with Ms. Draganov today: L.A.: Students continued working on their fables and legends. We are learning about the writing process (planning, drafting, revising/editing, publishing) and students are keeping track of their progress on the whiteboard. This way everyone is responsible for working independently and making sure that they are keeping up to speed. Math: We did some more work with 3-digit multiplication today. Students worked through word problems using the Problem Solving Pencils
Math: Students did an ANIE assessment for multiplication. This simple assessment asks students to solve a problem in a variety of ways and to provide a real-life example
L.A.: We read another fable with the grade 5s and a legend with the grade 4th. The students then continued working on their planning sheet for their stories. Ms. Draganov News from our classroom:
L.A.: Today students started planning their legends (gr. 4) and fables/folktales (gr. 5). Some students had trouble generating ideas, so I encourage parents/guardians to work with their kids to help them come up with a story! Here are some notes: Gr. 4: The starting place for planning the legend should be to think of a lesson of how something came to be (Examples from the class: How the Killer Whale Got its Name, How Night and Day Were Created, How the Fox Turned Orange, etc). Gr. 5: The starting place for planning the fable/folktale should be to think of a moral that is taught through the story (ie: Always Be Kind to Others, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, etc) There is no L.A. homework today Math: Today students expanded their knowledge of multiplication by learning how to multiply a three digit number by a one digit number. They also checked their work from last day with a partner (ask your child to show you an example). If they came across a different answer, they had to prove to each other which one was correct. There is homework! Art: We are continuing to work on our Picasso portraits! Photos will be posted once the projects are completed. Hint: we are squishing pop cans as part of the project! Ms. Draganov Here's what happened today:
Language Arts: The grade 4s read and studied a First Nations Legend with me, while the grade 5s read and studied an Indian folktale with Mr. Lord. Working in grade groups, the students then talked about the lesson/moral of the stories, the characters and plot. Great participation from everyone! There is homework! Math: We had Ms. Carrie in for a visit, so everyone was excited! We did a math challenge (ask your child!) to warm up and then did some real-life word problems using the standard method of multiplication. Ask your child about the example we did together. There is homework! - Ms. Draganov What a beautiful sunny day we had! There are lots of exciting things happening in the classroom. Here are a few:
L.A.: We started our legends and fables unit today! As an introduction, the students read a variety of First Nations legends (grade 4) and international fables (grade 5). Then we discussed the elements of each type of story and journaled about what we learned. Math: Today we learned about the standard method for multiplication. Ask your child to show you how it's done! Note: There is a great learning opportunity coming up for you on Thursday evening this week. There is a presentation on “How to support your child with Math” with Carol Fullerton at 7:00 pm at the school. Carol is an excellent presenter and this is well worth attending. Welcome back everyone! We have had a busy first week. Here is what's been going on in class: L.A.: - We will be starting a First Nations unit with the grade 4s and a myths and legends unit with the 5s. Students will be reading legends and myths and eventually writing their own. - We are also starting an at-home reading program. Students will be responsible for reading at home every night and keeping track of minutes read and asking parents/guardians to sign their reading logs. We will be recording results on our Reading Mountain which students will climb up as they read more pages. Math:
- We have started our multiplication unit. Today we focused on doubles and will be working with these over the next few days. - Students will be responsible for practicing their times tables at home and coming to me to test them when they feel they are ready. They will earn stickers once they can prove that they know their multiplication facts (see chart above)! Happy New Year everyone, I hope your holidays have been enjoyable. We would like to thank everyone for their thoughtful and generous presents this was overwhelming. Thank-you.
I hope you enjoyed your gifts we made you on Friday, December 19th. This activity/party was a nice way to spend the afternoon, students played games, made their brownies and hot chocolate in jars, snacked on mostly healthy snacks, some drank a bit too much pop and opened their Secret Santa gifts. On Thursday the 18th of December I sent home cross country ski forms, to be completed asap. We will be cross country skiing Jan 14 and 21st. We need some parent volunteers, so if you are interested in coming please contact [email protected] |
