We are assembling our lanterns and you will get to see them at the Poetry Café. They look great! Hi everyone, I am looking for the following things for our Poetry Cafe: - parent volunteers to bake some healthy treats for our poetry night on Tuesday, June 16th at 5pm - a couple of parents to help me set up the cafe after school on Tuesday, June 16th - some black table cloths or fabric. Does anyone have anything like this we could borrow for the night? - some mason jars to serve as "candle" holders at our cafe If you are able to volunteer or have any of the items above, please e-mail me at [email protected] Math: We are still working on our Playground Project. Today students took the survey results that they collected and made bar graphs in their groups. We will need some large cardboard boxes this week as we start constructing our playground models. If you have any that you are able to donate, please send them to school with your child tomorrow. Language Arts:
We are finishing up our last 2 poems and practicing reading poetry in front of the class in preparation for our Poetry Cafe. Ms. Draganov Welcome to June! It is hard to believe there are only four weeks of school left! Here is what happened today in Ms. Draganov's classes: Language Arts: Students started a new poem writing activity. They had to choose 7 random words from a box and then pick 5 to include in a poem that they are writing with a partner. They are really learning to work together and be creative through this process! Math:
Students continued working on their Minecraft characters. Some have already finished calculating the area and perimeter. Tonight's homework is to finish the 2nd column of the area and perimeter worksheet and to complete the drawing of their character. Language Arts:
Since we missed our art time on Monday, students had a chance to work on their paper lanterns today. They are looking beautiful! The students had some more time to practice reading their poetry to each other and gave each other feedback. Some even volunteered to read their poems in front of the class. We also started making invitations for our Poetry Cafe. It will be held on June 16th at 5:00pm. I will be looking for a couple of parent volunteers to help me set up the multipurpose room before the show, so if you are able to volunteer please e-mail me at [email protected]. We will also need some parents to bake some healthy treats to serve at the performance, so if you'd like to help, please let me know :- ). Math: Students continued working on their Mine Craft characters and we talked more about area and perimeter. - Ms. Draganov Here's what happened today: Language Arts: We are starting to prepare for our Poetry Cafe! Today we talked about public speaking and watched a video of kids performing poetry. We talked about posture, intonation, emphasis, eye contact and voice volume. Students then practiced reading one of their poems to a friend and gave each other feedback. Ask your child how you think they did and have a conversation with them about what makes a good public speaker. They will have a chance to practice their poems at home in the coming days. Here is the video just in case you'd like to take a look: And here are a few photos of the kids reading to each other :- ) Math:
We are continuing to work on our Design a Playground project. Today students went around the school and and asked other classes to participate in a survey about what they'd like to see included. We have also been talking about area and perimeter. We did a little bit more work with this today and started a fun activity where kids design a Mine Craft character on grid paper and then calculate its perimeter and area. This will help us when we have to go outside and measure our current playground. I will post a mini tutorial on area and perimeter on Thursday. ** Students have a field trip this Thursday to watch a performance at Brackendale Elementary. Please fill out the permission form and send $2 along with your child! Ms. Draganov :- ) Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a relaxing and fun sunny weekend! Here is what's happening in class: Language Arts: Today students wrote good copies of their Alliteration Poems. These are due tomorrow for those who did not finish. We are planning to host a poetry cafe in June for parents! To prepare, we will be working on public speaking so that all students can read a personal piece at the cafe. Stay tuned for details! :-) Math: We are doing a big collaborative project with Mrs. Parsloe's class. The students' job is to design a playground, build a scale model of it and present the idea to the PAC to wrap up the unit. This project will cover a range of concepts such geometry, measurement and graphing. Students will work in groups and will be responsible for dividing up tasks and working cooperatively throughout the project. Today we talked about perimeter and area and calculated the perimeter and area of basic shapes. Tomorrow students will be designing their own Mike Craft - inspired characters on graph paper and calculating the perimeter and area of their drawings. This will prepare us for going outside and looking at the area and perimeter of the existing playground. *** There is a field trip notice that went out today for students to see a performance at Brackendale Elementary this Thursday. Please sign the forms and send them back as soon as possible. Thank you! Ms. Draganov Hi everyone,

Students wrote good copies of their nature poems today. They are beautiful! I can really tell that they took the time to observe what they experienced through sitting alone in nature and that they worked hard to select colourful language. Here are a few samples. Enjoy :-) We had a great Monday in the Draganzini classroom! Here's what happened today: Language Arts: Today students started writing their nature poems. They are to focus on the 5 senses (plus the 6th sense of feeling) and write a poem incorporating these. Students have to include dual adjectives, triple-scoop words and at least one simile. Drafts are due tomorrow! Math: We are starting a collaborative project with Mrs. Parsloe's class. We will be designing a playground for the school and pitching the final project to the PAC. Today, we worked on writing a survey that we will be handing out to the rest of the school. Ask your child about it! Art: We finished our Dali art (check the photos page) and are working on lanterns. Here are a couple sneak peek photos! See you tomorrow! - Ms. Draganov See you tomorrow!
