Here's what happened today:
Language Arts:
We are starting to prepare for our Poetry Cafe! Today we talked about public speaking and watched a video of kids performing poetry. We talked about posture, intonation, emphasis, eye contact and voice volume. Students then practiced reading one of their poems to a friend and gave each other feedback. Ask your child how you think they did and have a conversation with them about what makes a good public speaker. They will have a chance to practice their poems at home in the coming days. Here is the video just in case you'd like to take a look:

And here are a few photos of the kids reading to each other :- )
Math:
We are continuing to work on our Design a Playground project. Today students went around the school and and asked other classes to participate in a survey about what they'd like to see included. We have also been talking about area and perimeter. We did a little bit more work with this today and started a fun activity where kids design a Mine Craft character on grid paper and then calculate its perimeter and area. This will help us when we have to go outside and measure our current playground. I will post a mini tutorial on area and perimeter on Thursday.
** Students have a field trip this Thursday to watch a performance at Brackendale Elementary. Please fill out the permission form and send $2 along with your child!
